Who We Are

Fab Lab is the educational outreach component of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms (CBA), an extension of its research into digital fabrication and computation. Fab Lab is a creative and technical prototyping platform for innovation , providing stimulus for personal fabrication and local entrepreneurship. Fab Lab is also a platform for learning, a place to play, to create, to learn, to mentor, and to invent. To be a Fab Lab means connecting to a global community of learners, educators, creators, technologists, researchers, makers, and innovators.

Fab Lab Addis is one of those Fab Labs that are scattered all across the globe. It was established in 2012 G.C by the collaboration of the Spanish Agency (AECID (Agency of International Development Cooperation)) and Addis Ababa University after the first trainees took the Fab Academy program from MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms which Prof. Neil Gershenfeld heads.

Since its establishment, it has offered countless training mainly on digital fabrication principles and practices and rapid prototyping for numerous stakeholders. It also develops prototypes for startups, students, instructors, and researchers. Designers, Artists, Architects, Engineers, Computer scientists, Physicists, Biologists, Medical professionals, and many more have beneted from fab lab activities. Besides, fab lab engages in commercial activities and collaborates with other stakeholders.
